- Why would the opening of the Liberal and Conservative Clubs have hit the local pub trade?-
- Which pub landlords spied for the Royalists during the English Civil War, and the Germans in the lead-up to WW1?
- Where were the Plume of Feathers and the County Hotel?
In bygone times pubs were about much more than socialising and drinking. They were a major part of the social, economic and political fabric of the City – and there were a lot of them – 81 in 1811, 1 in 9 high street premises in 1902, and one for every 311 of us at the time of WW1.
This tour is less about the pubs and more about what happened in them, and will provide answer the questions list above and below – and many more!
As we make our way from the Bridge to Star Hill I will cast some light on the lives of those who lived, worked or visited this bygone “dirty and disagreeable” place “that smelt of red herrings and sailors”.
The tour start from the Guildhall Museum, Rochester, and ends at Star Hill. They will last approx. 90 minutes.
There is no charge to join the tour but a collection will be held at the end for the Kent Air Ambulance. (KSS Air Ambulance Charity; athourisation ref: 325292.)
Each tour is limited to 10 persons – please book or email geoff.rambler@me.com
